origins
Warp & Weft was born in 2004 out of a desire to help reverse the degradation of Peru’s rich and varied textile history. Travelling through South America, we were buying antique textiles. Most new textiles we saw were machine-made synthetic replicas. We wanted to know if the old family heirlooms were being replaced. Who was keeping the skills and knowledge alive? A chance encounter in Cusco with the director of a self-governed community project ignited our passion for organic dyes. We were invited to learn the process of vegetable dyeing alpaca and lamb’s wool in the remote Ausangate Valley. The seed of Warp & Weft was sown. Back in Australia, our first humble purchase was 100 chullos (beanies). Since that time, we have shared our passion for these incredible creations face-to-face with many thousands of people, selling at markets and festivals across the east coast of Australia. It is within this intimate context we continue to share our beliefs and ethos, encouraging considered consumption.
